Andrews, William Johns -age 80, a retired Central Intelligence Agency researcher, died of melanoma, Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at Lahill Center in Silver Spring, Maryland. Dr. Andrews, who lived at Leisure World in Silver Spring, was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. He graduated from Princeton University. During World War II, he served in the Army in Aleutian Islands and Mainland, Alaska. After the war he received his masters degree and a doctorate in physics from the University of Virginia. In the late 1940s he worked briefly at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Washington and for several small consulting and research companies before joining the Central Intelligence Agency, serving 17 years before his 1981 retirement. He was involved in volunteer work for the Bethesda YMCA and Boys and Girls Homes and Community Services, Inc., and he had been active in the religious education program at Cedar Lane Unitarian-Universal Church in Bethesda. He was also a member of the Rossmore Kiwanis and the Unitarian Universalists of Leisure World. Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Akard Andrews of Leisure World, two children, Barbara Andrews Potter of Redmond, Washington, and Robert H. Andrews of Gaithersburg, and four grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, May 16, at the Inter-Faith Chapel, Silver Spring, Maryland. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Boys and Girls Homes and Community Services, Inc., 1320 Frnwick Lane, Suite 800, Silver Spring, Maryland 20910, or to the American Cancer Society, 11331 Amherst Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland 20902.
