Private , 5th N. Y. Inf. ,he was captured at the Battle of Chancellorsville while carrying one of his mortally wounded college friends from the field,this unit was better know as the Duryees Zouaves.Newberry was captured and was allowed to stay with the officers in charge,they begged him to stay with the Rebel troops and give medical help,he refused and was eventually released.After the Civil War he returned to the University of Michigan Medical school,he graduated in 1865.In 1867 he moved to Union City Michigan and became superintendent of schools.Newberry joined the Michigan National Guard in 1876and was commissioned Captain of Co. A, 2nd Regt. 1878, Lieut. Col. 2nd Regt. 1886 Inspector General of the Michigan National Guard 1887-1891. Spanish-American War 1898, Capt. Co. A,he was also elected Prosecuting Attorney at this time. 32nd Mich. Vol. Inf. Philippine Insurrection 1899-1901 Capt. Co. A, 30th U. S. Vol. Inf. which he served twenty one months. He was mustered out April 3 1901 ending his military career,he was the only veteren of three wars living in Michigan at that time.

Niles Daily Star (Niles, Mich.), Dec. 31, 1912, p.1. "Mrs. W. W. Dresden has received word of the death in San Jose, Cal., of Capt. Frank Newberry, who was there with his son. His wife, Mrs. Fanny Newberry of Coldwater, Mich., who recently visited Mrs. Dresden is quite ill at her home. Mrs. Horace Kitchell, a daughter, reached San Jose before her father died. Capt. Newberry is a prominent attorney."
