CDR Edward James Stauber, USCG 'Ret.', 87, of W. 8th St., where he lived for over 60 years, was called by God on Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, while visiting his daughter and her family in North Carolina. Ed was born on April 3, 1918 in Duluth to Anthony Benjamin and Ellen (Landgren) Stauber, the eldest of 10 children. He grew up in Duluth Heights and attended grade and junior high school there. He was a 1937 graduate of Central High School.

Ed was attending Duluth State Teachers College and serving as a Reservist in the U.S. Navy when he was called to active duty in 1940 to serve our country in what became World War II. He reported to the USS Paducah in Chicago. Ed rose in rank from Coxswain to Lt. JG while aboard various naval ships. He spent a great deal of the war in North Africa and for a time was Officer in Charge of the naval base in Oran, Algeria. When he returned to the U.S., he served as a Watch Officer on the Golden Gate Bridge preceding his relief from active duty. Ed spent over 33 years serving his country.

He met his wife, Kathleen LeBlanc while at Duluth State Teachers College and they were married on Sept. 21, 1940 in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Proctor. Ed and Katie celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with family during 2005. He was employed by Scott Graff Lumber Company and Radford Company. During this time he was also a Coast Guard Reservist and rose to the rank of Commander prior to his retirement.

Ed was a member of St. James Catholic Church. He was a Boy Scout leader for Troop No. 21 for many years and had a positive influence in the lives of many young men. He enjoyed spending time at his cabin on Little Sandy Lake and going to the 'hunting shack' with his brothers. He worked hard his entire life and was dedicated to seeing that his family never wanted for anything.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Marguerite; brother, Lawrence, as well as infant brothers, Richard and Michael; grandsons, Stevie and George and great-granddaughter, Kathleen.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; daughters: Edwardeen (John) Thompson, Donna Lee (George) Stratioti, Elizabeth (A. Ronald) Stauber-Johnson, Kathleen Mary (Jack) Johnson and Mary Jill (Michael) Busam; son, Richard Joseph; brothers: Anthony, Delano and Ronald; sisters: Lorraine Kari and Betty Samec; 24 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Burial will be at Oneota Cemetery.
