She was born October 4, 1950 in American Fork, Utah, to Cecil and Viola Bame. Karen's childhood was spent in the Provo, Utah area where she attended schools. Following her high school education she began working in retail.

On September 19, 1991, she married Dale A. Shane in Mackay, Idaho. They made their home in Mackay where Karen stayed busy with work and her hobbies. She was a member of the Moose Foundation and the ABATE of Idaho motorcycle organization.
Karen loved life to the fullest and enjoyed being with her family and friends. She was very outgoing and was always genuinely concerned for anyone that she met.
