The California Highway Patrol was formed in 1929 and Officer Dalziel was the 53rd CHP officer killed in the line-of-duty.

On June 30, 1945, CHP Officer James B. Dalziel was killed in a traffic collision while riding his departmental motorcycle.

Officer Dalziel was returning from duty on the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge shortly after midnight when a vehicle drove directly in front of his motorcycle. The collision killed the patrolman instantly.

Officer Dalziel was 55 years old and was a 28-year veteran of law enforcement service that began in 1917 with the San Mateo County Motor Patrol and continued uninterrupted when the county unit merged with the CHP.
