John D. Barr, former prominent resident of Elizabeth, died Saturday (March 16, 1940) at his home, 197 Elm Street. He was the only Republican ever elected to the Elizabeth City Council from the First Ward.

Mr. Barr was born in Scotland and came to this country with his parents when he was 8 years old, about the time that the Singer Manufacturing Co. was removing its plant from Glasgow to Elizabeth. He was employed nearly all his life with the Singer Co., serving as a department head at his retirement about ten years ago. He lived here about twenty years.

In Elizabeth, he was elected to the City Council as a Republican from the First Ward and served from July 2, 1894 to June 30, 1896, holding the position of president of the City Council. Active in the affairs of the Aleyone Boat Club, he served many years as its president. He was a member of Tyrian Lodge, F. & A.M., of Elizabeth, and of the Singer Veterans' Association.

There are no immediate survivors. His wife Luella Bennett Barr, died about two years ago.

Services were held Tuesday in Gray's funeral home. The Rev. Donald C. Graham, pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church, officiated. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.
