Mrs. Bolton found, on trip as spouse dies
Husband first operator to receive wires of Lincoln's assassination

An all night search for Mrs. Clarence A. Bolton, 223 West Fayette Street, by members of the Bolton family to inform her of her husband's sudden death yesterday, ended successfully this morning with her return from a visit with friends in the northern part of the State. She did not learn of her bereavement until arrival today.
Mr. Bolton, 79, an employe of the T.M.Gafney Printing Company at 238 West Fayette Street, was stricken with a heart attack late yesterday afternoon on his return to the Gafney establishment after delivering some bundles of printed matter to customers.
Fellow workmen summoned an ambulance. However, Mr. Bolton died before its arrival. The body was taken to the County Morgue where an autopsy last night showed death due to heart disease. He had been employed at the printing shop for 10 years.
Mr. Bolton, at one time a telegraph operator, had the distinction of receiving the first wires telling of the assassination of President Lincoln in Ford's Theater, Washington. At the time he was operating the wire of the Acme Oil Company at Baltimore.
A native of Syracuse, Mr. Bolton was for several years a mail carrier under the regime of Postmaster James M. Gilbert. He was widely known throughout the city.
Surviving besides his widow, are a son Fred Bolton; one daughter, Miss Florence Bolton, and one sister, Mrs. O.G. Lombard, all of Syracuse.
Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at the home of his son, 313 West Pleasant Avenue. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
