PORTSMOUTH - Earl P. Kelchner, 75, of 69 Elwyn Avenue, died Thursday, April 7, 2004, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
He was born in Portsmouth on September 2, 1928, the son of the late Harry and Helen (Philbrick) Kelchner and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1946.
Earl served in the United States Army during the Korean War and in the United States Army Reserves.
He was a self-employed carpenter for many years, starting his carpentry career working for his grandfather, W.C. Philbrick. He was also formerly employed as a rental agent at Atlantic Heights.
Earl was a member of Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, Order of Eastern Star; St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM of Portsmouth; Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portsmouth and Dover; N.H. Consistory 32 degree of Nashua; Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, American Legion of Portsmouth; and Senior Friends.
He enjoyed bus tours with Geo-Don, especially to the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut.
Survivors include his son, Keith E. Kelchner of Portsmouth; several cousins; and his longtime companion, Elizabeth Vareschi of Hampton.
Earl was predeceased by his wife, Louise (Defoe) Kelchner, on Sept. 1, 1988.

A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at noon. Donations may be made in Earl's memory to the American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal Street, Manchester, N.H. 03101.

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Earl P. Kelchner, 75, of 69 Elwyn Ave., Portsmouth, who died April 7, 2004, were held Saturday, April 10, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth. Father Gordon Allen officiated.
Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery, Westford, Mass., with committal services by Father Allen.
The American flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to Mr. Kelchner's son, Keith Kelchner.
Masonic services were held Friday evening by St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F & AM of Portsmouth, including Craig I. Brown, worshipful master; Steven Mackenzie, junior warden, PM; Chaplain Nelson D. Hersey, PM; secretary Donald H. Ladd, PM; marshal Thomas G. LaBerge, PM; and Frank White. Also assisting in the services were Robert E. Buffum, PM, and Rodney A. Robinson, PM, of St. John's Lodge No. 1 F & AM of Portsmouth.
