US Congressman. He taught in local schools during the winter months of 1858 through 1861 while studying law; he was admitted to the bar in February. In October, he enlisted with the 71st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, commissioned in February 1862 and promoted to captain the following year. In the fall of 1863, he was sent to the military post at Carthage, Tennessee remaining there until the end of the war. He established a law practice in Smith County, was appointed the District Attorney from April 1865 to 1867, when he was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives where he served until 1869. Returning to Ohio in 1875, he resumed his law practice until elected to serve in the US House of Representatives for two terms, from March 4, 1887 until March 3, 1891. He was also the editor of "The Buckeye", a local newspaper.
