George McAthy was a ventriloquist, magician, and ventriloquial figure-maker; his shop was in Burbank, California. As an amateur magician, his was known as ‘Mandroop'. He formed a comedy magical society called the "D.O.P.E.S." (the Deceptive Order of Prestidigitoral Entertainers). He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, IBM Ring 21 of Hollywood. He was
featured on the cover of the IBM's periodical, ‘Genii' in 1944 and again in 1967.
For a number of years he wrote a column, "McAthy's Ventopics" for ‘Tops' magazine, a magicians' periodical.
