death notice:
Heart attack fa... to Charles J. Carr
Services Wednesday for prominent citizen.
Charles J. Carr, industrial relations manager for the Douglas Santa Monica plant and pioneer resident of Santa Monica, died unexpectedly Saturday of a heart attack suffered while trimming shrubbery about his home at 840 Stanford Street.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, in the Little Chapel of the Dawn of Grates, Kingsley & Gates, 1925 Arizona Avenue, with the Rev. Charles M. Watson officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Douglas Co. employees.
Came to S.M. in 1913.
Mr. Carr is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ada B. Carr; three brothers, Walter, Edward A. and Robert C. Carr; two sisters, Mrs. J. J. Hogan and Mrs. William Pollys [sic]; a niece, Mrs. Lorin C. Finn, and an uncle, Samuel R. Clingen. The brother and sisters reside in Providence, R.I., and the niece and uncle in Santa Monica.
"Charlie" Carr, who was born in Chelsea, Mass. on September 5, 1884, had a colorful career even before coming to Santa Monica in 1913, having been active in gold mining in the boom days of Searchlight, Nev.
Mr. Carr represented the Los Angeles Herald as circulation manager in this district until 1919 and was an automobile dealer here during the subsequent period until 1940. In his automobile promotion work he trail-blazed many routes into remote scenic regions of the West, particularly in the desert and Death Valley, where he became an intimate friend of "Death Valley Scotty."
Joined Douglas in 1940.
Through associations with Donald W. Douglas and the late Carl Cove, then a vice president of the Douglas Co., he joined the Douglas organization before America's entry into the war in 1940 to handle employee relations.
In 1943 he transferred from personnel to the industrial relations department and recently was made industrial relations manager of the Santa Monica plant. He recently received a gold pin award in token of his five years' service with the company.
