Elven R. "John" Hartwig, son of Herman and Minnie (Fuhrman) Hartwig, was born December 16, 1915 in rural Stanton County, Nebraska, northeast of Norfolk. John died Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at Heritage of Bel-Air in Norfolk.

The youngest of 10 children, he grew up on the family farm and attended school in Norfolk. On September 27, 1939, John married Marguerite Anderson in Stanton. The couple was blessed with two sons, Larry and Gordon. John and Marguerite were partners in running a successful farming operation in Stanton County for 42 years before retiring and moving into Norfolk in June of 1981. John and Marguerite were married for 65 years until her death in February of 2004.

John was a member of Peace United Church of Christ where he had served as an Elder and also as a Deacon. He loved his family as well as fishing, hunting and working on his farm. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and they received a Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award from the Knights of Ak-sar-ben for having the farm in the family for over 100 years.

John is survived by: sons, Larry (Molly) Hartwig of San Diego, California, and Gordon (Barbara) Hartwig of Santa Barbara, California; and grandsons, Todd Hartwig and John Hartwig.

John was preceded in death by: parents, Herman and Minnie Hartwig; wife, Marguerite; brothers Edward, Ernest, Otto and Arthur; and sisters Rose, Lydia, Alice, Lillian and Dorothea.

Burial was in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Norfolk, NE.
