Hays -- Alfred J. Rohr, 83, of Hays, died March 17, 2009, at Hays Medical Center. He was born on Aug. 26, 1925, near Ellis to Joe L. and Agatha (Dreher) Rohr.
He married Mary Jane Staab in December 1947.
He attended country school and was a 1943 graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy. He attended watch-making school in Kansas City. He worked at Tholen Jewelry Store and started Rohr Jewelry Store in 1951. He retired from there after 42 years.
He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1325. Bishop Cunningham Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Toastmasters Club and the American Horological Society.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane, of the home; two sons, Al Rohr Jr. and wife, Becky, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mike Rohr and wife, Sue, of Newton; three daughters, Sandy Wasinger and husband, Tim, of Hays, Patty Dreiling and husband, Mike, of Overland Park, and Rose Dreiling and husband, Don, of Aurora, Colo.; a brother, Connie Rohr of Hays; three sisters, Rosie Dinkel, Clementine Begler and Marcella Wolf, all of Denver; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Philip, Ted, Jerry and Adolph; and a sister, Florine Pelzel. Services were at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, with military honors by VFW.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hays Medical Center, Cancer Council of Ellis County or Home Health of Ellis Good Samaritan Center, all of Hays. Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
