A month or two later his mother received a notice of Baptism from a skid row mission in California near the Golden Gate bridge. His sister, Imogene, hired a private investigator to search for him but never found any trace. She spoke with the pastor at the mission who said Phillip seemed troubled, but refused any counseling; just asked for the Baptism Certificate to be mailed to his mother, then left the mission. He was declared legally dead seven years later to allow probation of his parents estate, and a stone was placed at High Point Cemetery, Buffalo, in his parents plot, in Phillip's memory.
Almost half a century later, 2/13/2001, Curt Branch found the online SSAN death index: 525-34-8017 born 30 Apr 1922 died 18 Feb 1996 residence 92284 Yucca Valley, San Bernadino California card issued New Mexico before 1951.
WE ordered a copy of the original Social Security application and wrote to the RootsWeb mailing list for San Bernardino County asking whether anyone could give me further information. A volunteer looked up the death certificate and sent me the information, including the address of the person who received the remains after the body was cremated -- Clinton Dean, 2578 Hwy 160, Cortez, Colo 81321. I found a phone number on the internet but have since lost it. The death certificate listed a wife--Addie Linda Bradford Parsons, and Clinton Dean turned out to be Addie's son.
Phillip's nephew Curt still believes this is a case of stolen identity; that Uncle Pete would have never have just willingly walked out. It is very mysterious but I think it is really him, even tho I will never understand why.
I called and spoke with Clinton Dean and his wife.
Clinton Dean said his mother Addie died a few months after Pete.
He said Pete never talked about his past, and never mentioned any family. Mrs. Dean said that Addie had abandoned her children when they were small, and only in recent years had they been in contact, so Addie never talked about the past either.
Phillip K. Parsons and Addie Linda Bradford Parsons both died at Joshua Tree, California. He died Feb 18, 1996 age 73 and she died the same year, her son said. Addie was in the nursing home there and Phillip (Pete) was staying close by when he took sick and died. Dean said both Pete and Addie were heavy drinkers.
Phillip K. Parsons was a Veteran of WWII, served in the SeaBees (Naval Construction Battalion) in Italy around the bay of Naples.
