John Cargill was born on 1/18/1680 in Auchmithe, a small fishing town on the cliffs north of Arbroath. He was baptized 1/21/1680. He died sometime after 1743 although there is no record of his death. His parents were John Cargill and Janet Smith from Tealing, Angus. John married Isobel Bews around 1704 in Auchmithe. This stone was erected by John Cargill resident in the town of Auchmithie in memory of Isobel Bewes his spouse who departed this life 20.8.1743 aged 56y and Helen Cargill their daughter who departed this life 22.1.1743 at whose head this stone stands and for whom the said was designed before the ** death, they had also procured betwixt them besides the said Helen other 5 children John their 1st born and only surviving child at this present date and Robert who departed this life 29.5.1727 aged 16y. Agnes, James and Catharine who d. in infancy and are near this stone interred. John Cargill, Shipmaster in Auchmithy husband of Agnes Cargill d. at Arbroath 10.2.1776 aged 67y. Also David Cargill d.
