Mary was the eldest of five children. On June 10, 1886, she was baptized Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in White Haven, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Before she married, she worked as a winder at the silk mill. She married Fred Benscoter on June 23, 1915 at Mauch Chunk, Carbon County, Pennsylvania, and the couple raised two children: Elizabeth and Sheldon.
