CUTS THROAT AND ATTEMPS HANGING. HENRY ABLI MAKES DESPERATE EFFORT TO DIE. Aid Reaches Him Before Death Comes, But Injuries Later Prove Fatal – Was 80 Years Old, Believed Demented. After slashing his throat with a butcher knife he had first fled to a keen edge and attempted strangulation by means of a clothes line Henry Abli, past 80 years old and believed insane, was rescued by a neighbor and taken to the Washington county hospital. The attempted suicide was about 5:30 Saturday evening and was made at the home of his former wife on Third street opposite the high school building. When taken to the hospital it was believed the injured man had a good chance of recovery, but he dies Tuesday morning. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the Limber funeral parlors and was under the auspices of the G.A.R., deceased having been an old solider. The Ablis figured in divorce proceedings in the circuit court a few months ago and a decree was granted and property interests settled. Some weeks after the decree Abli returned to his former home and was given a room and has since remained. It is said he has given frequent evidence of mental derangement, and Mrs. Abli says that Saturday he asked her several times if she was still offended with him and it is believed possible that he planned to first kill her and then himself. He spent much time Saturday in the back yard in filing the knife to a razor like edge, and late in the afternoon evidently completed his preparations which included knotting a noose in a clothes line and fastening it to a cross piece above a gate. He then slashed his throat, making a deep cut but missing the jugular and windpipe and then placing the noose about his neck leaned upon it, with feet upon the ground. He was seen in this position by Gideon Hickey, a neighbor, who ran to the scene and loosened the rope and laid Abli upon the ground. The latter was unconscious and was covered with blood from the throat wound, but he showed remarkable vitality and soon recovered consciousness. Dr. Robb was called and gave first aid and Abli was taken to the hospital in August Tews' car. In the excitement following the discovery Abli no doctor was at first called, but instead Coroner Limber was notified. The latter arrived soon after, but after examining Abli, who had been made as comfortable as possible with blankets brought form the house, remarked that it was evident he was not needed and asked if a doctor had been called.
