REV. G.W. KIERCE

At an early hour this (Friday) morning, the spirit of Rev. G.W. Kierce ex-confederate soldier and for sixty years a minister of the gospel, took flight. It was only yesterday that our attention was called to one of the most touching incidents that has been brought to our attention in many years and this incident was one that was prompted by the generous and unselfish spirit that was characteristic of the noble life of the subject of this sketch.

Judge J.M. Robinson was a member of the committee for war, the Red Cross Drive; knowing that Rev. Mr. Kierce has been an invalid for years and for the past five years, absolutely confined to his bed with no income except the pension that comes to him as one of the heroes of the lost cause, the Judge naturally did not solicit a contribution. Later in the day, however, Judge Robinson received from Rev. Mr. Kierce a contribution to the Red Cross fund of five dollars, accompanied by the following letter:

"17 Dunson Street, Andalusia, May 22, 1918
"Judge Robinson:
"I used to tell your father that the one promise of the Lord that did me good was "Trust in the Lord and do good, that thou shalt dwell long in the land and verily thou shalt be fed, "That being fed is what we are all looking for.
"We send you for the Red Cross Fund five dollars.
"Our prayers and God's tidings go with it.
G.W. Theodosia Kierce

When the letter was received, it was not long until the big hearted Judge Robinson got busy. He told some business men what had happened and in less time than it takes to tell it, they contributed $53.03 to a fund and Judge Robinson, accompanied by his mother, carried it to Mr. Kierce's home and there amid sobs and tears on the last day that the venerable minister lived on earth, he was made to realize how kindly the people among where he lived all these years feel toward him and how much they appreciate the sacrifice that he was willing to make to the Fund that is being raised to help our dear brave soldier boys who are to suffer from sickness and wounds on the battle front in France. The deceased is survived by the widow and one son, Dan Kierce and a number of relatives.

Funeral services will be held at Fairmount Church near Red Level Saturday. The Masons will have charge of the service and every Mason in the county is urged to be out.
