He was born in Aiken, a son of the late Daniel Sullivan and Lillie Ripley Henderson. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate Davidson College and was a senior member of the law firm of Henderson, Salley Cushman and Bodenhiemer before his retirement in 1964.
He served as president of the S. C. Bar Association and as a special judge of the Court of Common Pleas and General Sessions of South Carolina as acting associate justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court.
For 35 years he was chairman of the board of trustees of the Aiken school district. He was a former president of the Aiken Chamber of Commerce, treasurer of the Aiken Hospital association, and grand chancellor of the Grand Domain of the Knights of Pythias of South Carolina.
He was the author of "A Short History of Aiken and Aiken County" a former president of the Aiken Bar Association and a delegate to the 1924 Democratic national convention.
He had been an elder of the First Presbyterian Church since 1921 and was a former moderator of the Synod of South Carolina.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. June Rainsford Henderson; two daughters, Mrs. W. F. E. Cabaniss of Washington, D. C. and Mrs. Frank E. Edwards of Augusta, Ga.; a brother, Dan S. Henderson of Aiken; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
