Billy P. Casteel, 61, of the Old Asheville Highway, Greeneville, died Tuesday evening at James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. His family stated, "He went home to be with the Lord."

Mr. Casteel was a self-employed construction worker until he became disabled.

He was a member of People's Tabernacle.

Mr. Casteel was a "proud" veteran of the Vietnam War and a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge and Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Parachute Badge.

"He was dearly loved by his wife, children, family, and especially his grandchildren. He was a friend to all who knew him, and his life touched many people," his family noted.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years: Regina Casteel; two sons and a daughter-in-law: Chuck Casteel and Daniel and Tammy Casteel; a daughter: Jennifer Brown; his grandchildren: Justin Casteel, Whitney Casteel, Caleb Brown, and Tucker Brown; four brothers and sisters-in-law: Elmer "Buck" and Euna Casteel, Lynn and Kathy Casteel, Steve and Beverly Casteel, and Dave and Ann Casteel, all of Greeneville; three sisters and brothers-in-law: Liz and Doyle Arwood of Greeneville; Martha and Kenny Harper of Linville, N.C., and Ann and Stanley Souder of St. Albans, W.Va.; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Everette and Ruth Ottinger, Kenny and Glenna Ottinger, Bobby and Debbie Ottinger, Mike and Ginger Ottinger, Kathleen Cutshaw, Erma Marshall, Dorothy Ottinger, Brenda and Jack Nease, Rezetta Casteel, Glenna Casteel, and Phyllis Casteel; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; his special friends: Willie and Linda Patterson and Mickey Brown; and a special friend of the family: Shannon Traynham.

He was a son of the late Rev. Elmer and Ruby Casteel and was preceded in death by a sister: Barbara Boyd; and five brothers: Jim Casteel, Harold Casteel, Roger Casteel, Fred Casteel, and Phillip Casteel.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Kiser Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the House of the Lord Church. The Rev. Kenny Harper and the Rev. Gene Stills will officiate.

Interment will follow in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens. A military graveside service will be conducted by the Greeneville-Greene Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Freddie Kesterson, Gary Ricker, Donnie Holt, Alex Arwood, John Ottinger, Tim Nease, Roger Casteel, Jeff Casteel, and Willis Ricker.

Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews, "whom he loved."
