Nancy Lorene Williams was born near Idlewild, TN, the youngest child of Carroll and Vina Williams. She was named for her grandmother, Nancy Akin Knott. She was educated in the Mount Pisgah School near Idlewild, where she received a sixth grade education.

At the age of 16, she married Fred McCartney who lived near Skullbone in the Goosefoot community. They moved to Weakley County briefly where their first son was born. Afterwards, they returned to Gibson County and lived for a brief time near her birthplace. Their second son was born here. Eventually, they settled on land close to Fred's family. They built a house in 1947 and it remained in the same location for around 20 years. Their third son was born during this time. In the late 1960s, they moved the house down the road, turned it sideways, and added on.

Fred died of cancer at their home in 1977 and Lorene continued living in their home until 2004, when she moved into a nursing home. She was hospitalized on Sept. 10, 2006. She passed away, surrounded by family, on Sept. 16, 2006, and was buried two days later at Belew's Chapel Cemetery.

Lorene was the best Granny and was loved by all. A hard worker, she would do anything for anyone. She always made sure her family was taken care of.
