The B-17G aircraft (Nickname: Hells Bells), had the destination of Brunswick, Germany. On the return flight the aircraft received a flak hit in the wing which apparently punctured the Tokyo tanks as gas was seen streaming out.

Other nearby crews report that the aircraft was straggling and blew up as a result of an enemy aircraft attack.
