U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Yale College in 1777, was town clerk of Shelter Island, New York, (1783-87) and a member of the New York State Assembly, (1786-95). He was elected to the New York State convention which ratified the Federal Constitution, in 1788 and justice of the peace of Suffolk County, in 1795. In 1795, he was elected as a Republican to the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Congresses, serving until his death.
