John Robert Fox, age 59, of Rapid City, S.D. died of a massive heart attack Dec. 5, while scuba diving in the Bahamas. Though it could be said John had many 'loves' in his life, scuba diving with his friend Kim, leaves for his friends an image of complete joy!

The son of J. George and Peggy D. (DeBusk) Fox, born Aug. 24, 1947 in Birmingham, Ala. He graduated Valedictorian from Ansley High School, with his B.S. and M.S. from Auburn University, and his Medical degree from the University of South Alabama, Birmingham. After practicing Family Medicine in Alabaster, Ala. for many years, John continued his studies in Psychiatry, completing his residency at the University of South Alabama Medical Center in 1992 in Mobile, Ala.

He moved to Rapid City, S.D. in 1991, continuing his practice in psychiatry with Black Hills Psychiatry Associates and Rapid City Regional Hospital. He also extended his private practice with an outreach clinic in Pierre, S.D. He was certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and held specialized certification in Addiction Medicine by the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

John was a life-long learner and showed a remarkable range of interests in studies from the sciences, philosophy and religion, physics, mechanics, machine tools as well as aviation, having 30 years of flying experience as well as owning and maintaining his 7765Y-Twin Comanche plane-'An extension of his right arm,' as he would call it.

Relaxation for John was rebuilding engines and restoring his Corvette or one of his several old Chevy Suburbans. His shop was a real place of renewal and with his machinist's talents, John could fabricate any part he couldn't find otherwise. He is missed by his loyal feline friends: Oscar, Ellsworth, Boo and Norma, cats which shared much love with John.

John's compassionate heart and brilliant mind meant that many friends in Rapid City and Pierre wish they could share that dry humor, Southern Drawl and charm, and love of his home made pie. Deeply spiritual and always seeking what God wanted above all else, his patients knew John as a Doctor who could enter into their lives as a trusted friend and helper.

Proceeded in death by his parents, He is survived by his daughter, Stacey Fox Barwick (Scott) of Alabaster, Ala.; brother, Thomas Fox of Alabaster, Ala.; nephew, Brandon Fox (Lisa) of Hoover, Ala.; uncle, Martin Fox (Jean) of Fairfield, Ala.; cousin, Laura Nigg (Robert) of Bessemer, Ala.; and cousin Beth DeBusk of Prattville, Ala. Kim Roberts, of Pierre, S.D., many friends and acquaintances.

A memorial service is being planned for Saturday Jan. 6th at South Park United Church of Christ, 2201 3rd Street, Rapid City, S.D. You may extend you sympathies through the guestbook at Kirk Funeral Home at www.kirkfuneralhome.com
