Mrs. Ann Eliza Gridley. Heroic Figure of the Civil War Dies at Washington.
Washington, Oct. 18. In the death of Mrs. Ann Eliza Gridley at the home of her son, L.C.Gridley, in Washington Saturday, there passed away one of the heroic figures of the civil war.
Mrs. Gridley went from Hillsdale, Mich., to become a nurse in the federal field hospitals, and served until the end of the conflict. Her work as a nurse included feats of endurance and skill having few duplicates in the service, and she was the recipient of personal acknowledgement from Grant, Sherman and Sheridan. Had it not even for the vast extent of the war and the many claims for recognition of distinguished service it is probable that Mrs. Gridley would have even singled out for unusual honors, but she was modest to a degree. The best the government ever did for her was to give her an appointment as a clerk in the general land office, a position she held to the day of her death.
She was the mother of the late Capt. Charles V. Gridley, who commanded Dewey's flagship at the battle of Manila.
The funeral will be inducted form her son's home here Sunday afternoon, and the remains will be escorted to the depot by the Spanish War Veterans of Washington, Interment taking place at her old home in Hillsdale on Wednesday.
Owing to the death of Mrs. Gridley, the unveiling of a memorial tablet to Capt. Gridley in Bancroft Hall, United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, which was to have been dedicated Wednesday next, has even postponed.
