Updated and correct information as of 21 June 2021

Margaret Herlihy Counihan was born in Ireland to parents (Mr.) Herlihy and Margaret Teehan. A handwritten document written by her son-in-law William Gray at the time of her death indicates that she was born in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, and came to the U.S. in 1860 on the City of Washington. From there, she went to Townsend, Massachusetts, where she worked for several years. She finally arrived in San Francisco in March 1864, and on to Virginia City, Nevada, in June 1865. Storey county marriage records show she married Cornelius Counihan on 3 November 1867 in Virginia City.

Margaret's family was censused in Virginia City in 1870, 1880, and 1900. According to the 1900 census, Cornelius and Margaret had eleven children, only three of whom were living in 1900. (Four of the remaining eight share a headstone in this cemetery.)

Margaret continued to live in Virginia City until at least 1910, when she is censused living alone there. In 1930, she lived on Chestnut Street in Reno together with her son-in-law William Gray and her widowed daughter Margaret Howk. She died at home there in 1931 of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Plot information from 1998 survey and transcription of cemetery, as shown on NVGenWeb Project archives.

Please note this memorial was originally created by a known fictionalizer on FindAGrave. The photos are generally stock and historical photos of unidentified people, and not those named in the memorials. Some photos were used multiple times. His photos of people have been deleted almost entirely from Silver Terrace cemeteries, but the same has yet to be done for Gold Hill. Data such as full birth dates and places (when not shown on the gravestone) had no source and were invented. If you added these photos and "facts" to your family tree, please be sure to verify everything carefully.
