Indiana Governor. Born in Martinsville, Indiana, he graduated from Indiana University, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1899 and established a successful legal career. During the Spanish-American War, he enlisted in the US Army and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He also served in World War I, as a Colonel in the 151st Infantry and later commanded the 165th Depot Brigade at Camp Travis, Texas. Entering politics in 1902, he served as a member to the Indiana House of Representatives, (1903-07) and as Indiana's Lieutenant Governor, (1920-24). On April 30, 1924, when Governor Warren McCray resigned from office, Branch was appointed the 31st Governor of Indiana. After leaving office in 1925, he retired from political life and resumed his legal career. He died at age 57 in Martinsville, Indiana.
