She attended high school in Frederick, SD, and furthered her education at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught at Straume School near Hannaford, ND, and Flakoll School near Forbes, ND.
On September 5, 1943, Jennie married Sigurd Flakoll at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen, SD. She resided on the family farm until her death. Sigurd died August 27, 1998. Her hobbies included cooking, baking (especially Norwegian), sewing, quilting, needle work, and gardening. She was a member of Aurdal Lutheran Church, Forbes and Christ the King Lutheran Church, Ellendale, where she was an active participant in WELCA and quilting group. She was also a charter member of Forbes Homemakers Club. Jennie had a great love for her family and her Lord. She looked for the best in people and always had a kind word for everyone. Her radiant and beautiful smile will be missed by all who were privileged to know her. She is survived by her son, Herb (Cindy) Flakoll, Forbes, ND; daughter, Marilyn Diane (Plenny) Nelson, Forbes, ND; one sister, Sylvia (Ray) Ofstedal, Brookings, SD; one brother, Dean (Anna) Melland, Forbes, ND; five grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant daughter, Margaret Ann; and sisters, Marie, Minnie, Borghild, Olga, Alma, Esther, and Clara.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 3 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Ellendale, with Pastor Galen Sylvester officiating. Visitation with a prayer service at will be held Friday, March 2, at Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale. Burial will be at the Aurdal Lutheran Cemetery, rural Forbes, ND. Casket Bearers will be Deric Knutson, Nathan Knutson, Dave Melland, Tim Flakoll, Shawn Sigafoos, and Tom Berheim. Soloist will be Shawn Sigafoos. Organist will be Katie Miller. Hoven Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Christ the King Lutheran Church, Aurdal Cemetery Association, or Dickey County Parish Nurse Program.
