MCVEYTOWN - Craig W. Rupert, 88, of Lombard St., McVeytown, died at 5:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at the Malta Home, Granville.

Born April 9, 1920, in McVeytown, he was a son of the late D. Corbin and Alice C. (Stine) Rupert. His wife, Martha Lou (Renninger) Rupert, whom he married Jan. 24, 1947, survives.

Also surviving are: three sons, Ronald C. and wife Mercedes, of Lewistown, Sheldon R. and wife Linda, of York, Michael L. and wife Shonna, of York; a sister, Susan 'Betty' Grassmyer, of McVeytown; a brother, William H. Rupert and wife Doris, of McVeytown; three grandsons, Craig M. Rupert and wife Margaret, Kyle M. Rupert, and Shane J. Rupert; two great-grandchildren, Ronald 'Joey' Rupert and Katherine A. Rupert.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Anna Mary Seibert, Hannah R. Arnold, M. Ruth Yeater, Alice C. Penepacker; five brothers, Merrill S., Ray C., Donald 'Tuffy', David L., and an infant brother Ross.

A World War II veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, he served in the European theatre, having flown 46 combat missions, primarily as a B-17 and B-26 bomber ball turet gunner with the 444th bomb squadron 320th bomb group.

He was employed as an electrician at the American Viscose Corp. and Avtex Fibers, also working part time as an insurance agent.

He was a member of the McVeytown Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. For 28 years he served as a member and secretary of the McVeytown Water and Sewer Authority. He also served for a number of years on the McVeytown School Board and the Lewistown Granville Rothrock School Board.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the McVeytown Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jeanette Mater officiating. Interment will be in Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 South Market St., McVeytown.
