He was born Nov. 16, 1918, in Rock Island, to Arthur and Mamie (McGee) Gotthardt. He married Margaret E. Miller on June 8, 1946, in Rock Island. She died Feb. 14, 2000. Howard was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Ball-McColm Post 5, American Legion. He enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing. During World War II, he served in the Army.
