Howard died April 21, 2001, at Newman Memorial County Hospital. He was employed several years as a clerk at the U.S. Postal Service, Emporia. He was born Nov. 16, 1918, in Rock Island, to Arthur and Mamie (McGee) Gotthardt. He married Margaret E. Miller on June 8, 1946, in Rock Island. She died Feb. 14, 2000. Howard was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Ball-McColm Post 5, American Legion. He enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing. During World War II, he served in the Army. Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Ball-McColm Post 5, American Legion, sent to Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, 605 State St., Emporia, KS 66801. Surviving family members are daughters, Sherri Duke, Altus, Okla., and Marcia Duke, Emporia; grandchildren, Jenny Duke, Batesville, Okla., Michael Duke, Chesapeake Bay, Va., and Daniel Duke, Springfield, Mo.; great-grandchildren, Nathan Duke, Batesville, Okla., Hayden Ward, Batesville, and Katelyn Duke, Springfield, Mo.; a sister, Marilyn Bergeron, Rock Island; and a brother, Kenneth Gotthardt, Rock Island.
