Marquess of Dorset
Earl of Dorset, third son of Edmund Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset and Lady Eleanor Beauchamp.
His brother Henry, 3rd Duke of Somerset, inherited the family title but was killed fighting for the House of Lancaster against the House of York at the Battle of Hexham 15 May 1464. The second son, Edmund inherited the Dukedom and John became the Marquess of Dorset despite the fact that the Yorkish king, Edward IV did not recognize their positions or titles resulting in John being in exile, at Burgundy and then France. When Lancastrian Henry VI took over the throne, John returned to England with is brother, Edmund, for the very short time before the Yorks were in control again and Henry was usurped.

John died 04 May 1471 at the Battle of Tewkesbury, along with his brother, Edmund, who was captured and beheaded after their defeat, ending the legitimate Beaufort line.
