Leslie, Maude "Mudge"(nee Allen)
MADISON - Mudge Leslie died at Willow Pointe Assisted Living in Verona on Monday, April 16,2007, surrounded by family and friends. Mudge was born on April 24, 1915, to Delia (Walker) and Alex Allen on the Allen farm on Highway 78 near Portage. Mudge completed Dog Hollow Country Graded School, typed manuscripts for author Zona Gale during high school, and graduated from Portage High School in 1933. After moving to Madison, Mudge worked in various occupations, including live-in child care, "soda jerk" for the former Rennebohm's Drug Store, and stenographer for the State of Wisconsin, including for the Beverage Tax Commission, all in Madison. After a seven year courtship, Mudge married Edward A. Leslie on April 25, 1940, at Caledonia United Presbyterian Church, in Columbia County near the Allen farm. Mudge and Ed began there life together at 600 S. Brearly St., until 1948, when they moved into a home at 4106 S. Meyer Ave. ,built by Ed after his return from Naval service during World War II. Mudge enjoyed her new friends in the neighborhood, especially Laurainne Burgi, with whom she remained close for almost 50 years. In 1953, Ed and Mudge moved to a new home at 470 S. Midvale Blvd., where they made more new friends and remained until 2000. During these years, Mudge raised three children, and became active in various capacities at Christ Presbyterian Church, Midvale Elementary School, the Midvale community, and other neighborhood endeavors, frequently with Laurainne, or two of Mudge's special sisters, Lil and Dorothy. Mudge especially loved auctions, garage sales, wild flowers, crossword puzzles, cooking, collecting recipes, reading, shopping, traveling, bowling, collecting cut glass, numerous activities with her siblings and their families, and her grandchildren. Mudge was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian church and love dreading and studying her Bible. Mudge never lost her deep love for the Allen farm, its hills, woods, and wildflowers, its view of the Capitol in Madison on a very clear day, and regaled her children and grandchildren with many stories of her wonderful years growing up on the farm with her big and loving family. We're certain that Mudge is now thrilled to be reunited with her beloved Ed, and with the many family members and friends whom she lost in recent years. Mudge Leslie is survived by three children, and five grandchildren, and many dear nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Mudge was preceded in death by her parents;her beloved husband of 62 years, Ed, in 2002; six siblings,Lillian Clifford, Evelyn Winkler, Marie Uffenbeck Wintrone, Dorothy Milton, Wallace Allen and Barbara Allen; and a granddaughter,Angelica Brassington. The family would like to offer sincere thanks to the excellent and devoted staff of Willow Pointe Assisted Living in Verona, and to the excellent and supportive staff of HospiceCare Inc., all of whom helped Mudge to extend and enjoy her life with comfort and dignity. A Memorial Service for Mudge Leslie will beheld at CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 944 E. Gorham, Madison on Saturday, April 21, 2007, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Glen Reichelderfer officiating.
