Andrew is the son of Andrew James and Mary Adeline Padgett Cunningham. He was born and raised in Martin and Daviess Counties until the family moved to Onaka, Faulk, South Dakota in Sep 1908.

There he met and married Bertha M. Olson and they were married the 31st of May 1910 at St. John's Catholic church. They lived in LaValley, Lincoln County; Split Rock, Minnehaha County; Montrose, McCook County and finally settled down in Sioux Falls in 1943 where they lived out the rest of their lives.

Andrew and Bertha were parents of 13 known children: Charles "Carl" Andrew, Vincent James, Earl William, Louis Flavin, Frances Mary (Rothans), Mary Ellen (Kutil), Doris Wilma (Mathison), Agnes R. (Gallagher), Catherine (Pease), Margaret Helen (Beverage), John E., Patricia Ann (Jones), and Michael.
