Houston was born in Jackson Parrish, LA, one of nine children. The draft of the Civil War caught him at age 17 but he saw no fighting. The family moved to Texas in 1865. Houston began to drive cattle up the trail, driving cattle from Hays County. Houston settled down in Hays County and married Katherine Deborah Neill, daughter of the Mexican War veteran who was at San Jacinto. After the wedding the couple moved to the Sabinal Canyon in 1875. The couple settled down above the present day Utopia. Houston continued to work with stock driving herds of horses up the trial. His wife died in 1907, leaving a large family....May, Edna, Lula, Maude, Katie, Sam, Doss, Charley and Morris. Houston remarried in 1914 to Mrs. Helen Moore of San Antonio. She became ill and died in 1935. He was faithfully cared for by his children. He died in 1942 and is buried in Jones Cemetery.
