Mary Melissa Jane Reed was born November 8, 1870 in Missouri, daughter of John E. Reed and Rhoda Henson.

In about 1890, Mary married Herman Otto Wilkie, who was born circa 1863 in Michigan, son of Christ Wilkie and Mary Wuprie. Herman was a first-generation American as both of his parents were born in Mecklenburg, an historical region in northern Germany.

The 1900 Federal Census for Meade Center, Kansas (Meade County) shows Melissa M. Wilkie, age 29, born November 1870 in Missouri; and her husband, Herman O. Wilkie, a farm laborer, age 35, born October 1864 in Maryland (should say Michigan). The census shows that Melissa and Herman had been married 10 years and had given birth to seven children, of which six were still living. Living with them were six children: Sterling S., age 9, born November 1890; William O., age 9, born May 1891; Minnie May, age 6, born October 1893; Andrew F., age 4, born March 1896; Zelphia L., age 2, born March 1898; and Gertie H., age 2 months, born April 1900; all born in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) except Gertie, who was born in Kansas.

The 1910 Federal Census for Maxwell, Oklahoma (Pontotoc County) shows Mary M. Wilkie, age 39, born in Missouri; and her husband Herman O. Wilkie, a house carpenter; age 45, born in Michigan. Living with them were nine children: William O. Wilkie, age 18, a farm laborer; Minnie M. Wilkie, age 16, a farm laborer; Andrew F. Wilkie, age 13, a farm laborer; Zelpha L. Wilkie, age 12, a farm laborer; Grace L. Wilkie, age 10; Herman A. Wilkie, age 7; Walter R. Wilkie, age 5; Oscar H. Wilkie, age 3; and Francis I. Wilkie, age 1; all born in Oklahoma except Grace who was born in Kansas. The census shows that Mary and Herman had been married 20 years and that they had given birth to 11 children, of which 9 were still living.

The 1920 Federal Census for Durant Ward 1, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Mary J. Wilkie, age 49, a widow, born in Missouri. Living with her were seven children: Will O. Wilkie, age 28, a laborer; Andrew F. Wilkie, age 22, a laborer; Grace Wilkie, age 20, a waitress; Alfred Wilkie, age 17, a laborer; Walter Wilkie, age 15; Howard Wilkie, age 13; Francis Wilkie, age 11; Ruth Wilkie, age 11; Ruth Wilkie, age 10; all born in Oklahoma.

Mary died October 16, 1941 and was buried in the Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County).
