He was born in Washington, D. C., son of the late Joseph E. and Olive Price Hartman.
He was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church, Gettysburg. He was employed by the Musselman Company in Biglerville for a number of years.
Mr. Hartman was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, the former Mary M. O'Donnell; children, Joseph B. Hartman Jr., of Oakland, Cal., Mrs. Patricia Deardorff of Fairfield, Mrs. Mary Kint of Gettysburg Rt. 1, James Hartman of Baltimore, Mrs. Diane Fitzgerald of Thurmont, and John Hartman with the U. S. Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; eight grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Mrs. Ruth Cochrane of Rockville, Md., George L. Hartman of Gettysburg R 6, Mrs. Anna Rogers of Miami, Fla., Jay Hartman of Oxon Hill, Md., and Robert Hartman of Forrestville, Md., and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Monaham Funeral Home, Gettysburg, with Rev. David C. Sheppard officiating. Interment will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at the funeral home, Friday evening.
