The son of Benjamin Sanford (1763-1859) and Freedom Strong (1766-1856) both of Canada. James married Sarah Woolaver. They were the parents of 11 children: Sarah, Rachel, Levi, Lois Amelia (first wife of Thomas Loney), Benjamin, Maria (who married William MacDougall and whose daugher, Sarah, was the second wife of Thomas Loney), Amelia, Catherine, Mary, James and Nathan. James and his wife Sarah, and a number of their children moved west, most settling in Grass Valley.
