Capturer of Lawrence Boys Announces Self for Sheriff
"In seeking the office of sheriff of Maricopa county I can make no other promise to taxpayers than to strive to promote a businesslike administration if elected," said Ralph L McDonald, in announcing himself as a candidate for sheriff, subject to the Democratic primaries.
"My announcement is made purely as a response to a request from friends who have come into association with me as an officer. I have always been a staunch Democrat, and will make my campaign on a straight Democratic policy," McDonald declared.
McDonald is a full fledged native Arizona son. He was born on a farm nine miles south of Tempe, 33 years ago, being the son of John B McDonald, a well known southwestern ranger and pioneer settler of the Salt River Valley.
Attracted to the mercantile business as a youth of 16, McDonald took a position as clerk in a store at Tempe and continued in this line of trade for 10 years, when he was chosen to serve as night marshall of Tempe. Later he was elected chief of police of Tempe, in which capacity he is now serving.
During the administration preceding the present one, he was deputy sheriff and made a host of admirers over the valley.
One of the outstanding pieces of police work to McDonald's credit was last February when, with the assistance of Cruz Reyes, a Mexican laborer, he captured the Lawrence brothers, who killed Policeman Hazel Burch. The capture was made atop the butte overlooking Tempe.
McDonald is a married man with four children. He is an ex-service man, having served with the Arizona National Guard on the Mexican border in 1916.
