Folk Lore is that when he was 12 years old he overheard his father; John Woods, talking to another man about selling him as an indentured servant for one year. That night he stole a mule and went to East Texas, Center, and Shelby County, Texas. Other stories are that he went to Texas in a covered wagon with other family members.
Sometime after arriving in East Texas he stepped on a thorn and got blood poising in his left foot. They had to cut his left leg off below the knee.
He met and married Ida Fay Maxwell on 3 May 1898. They owned and operated a General Merchandise store in East Center. During the great depression they went bankrupt.
He was also a Tax Assessor and Tax Collector for the State of Texas.
