Mr. Abernathey was born May 29, 1916, at Vinton, IA, the son of Clarence and Florence Abernathey. He was raised and educated at Vinton. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Fairbanks, AK, during World War II then worked for John Deere in Waterloo, IA, for several years. He married Maralee Barrett-Rosicka, Jan. 3, 1959, at Red Wing. They bought a farm near Wilton and farmed until 1972, when they moved to the Turtle River area. They owned and operated the King Koin Laundromat in Bemidji from 1972 to 1981.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Mike Abernathey of LaPorte City, IA, Tom Abernathey of Freemont, Ind., and Joseph Rosicka of Hopkins: five daughters, Lorena Harting of Madison, Tenn., Patty Schauls of Oshkosh, WI, Peggy Ditty of Bemidji, Cindy Thorson of New Hope and Karen Morrison of LaPorte City, IA: 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Mourby of Vinton, IA and Luella Studebaker of Independence, IA; and one brother, James Abernathey of Traer, IA.
