Charles was the son of Charles Albert Crance, Senior and Surrillida G (Rilla) Walters Koster and stepson to William Koster. He married Anna Florence (Annie) Hurt on the 21st day of December 1915 in Beckley, Raleigh County, West Virginia.

Surname confusion, Charles' birth record states he is a Crance. Crance was also used on his marriage record, 1930 and 1940 United States Federal Censuses. Coster was used on his 1900 United States Federal Census, where he was living with his mother and step-father, William Coster/Koster. Coster was also used on his World War I and II Draft Registrations, death certificate, United States Social Security Death Index. Charles' stepfather, William Coster/Koster's headstone is engraved as Koster. William's parents were German.
