Elsie was the child of Wilhelmina Spatz. She was born in Mannheim, Germany and raised in Bad Durkheim. She was raised by her mother's sister and husband, Ernst and Elisabeth Hedrich. She immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 14 and married Leo Kerner. The couple had two children, Martha who died at the age of 1 y/6 months of Diptheria, and Rose. Elsie left Leo and married George Haegeman on the 28th day of September, 1907.
