Herbert Lee Garner, 73, of Washington, died on Saturday, February 26, 2011, at the Washington Hospital.

He was born on July 9, 1937, in Washington, a son of Herman and Georgia Iams Garner.

Mr. Garner had worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 43 years, as a letter carrier.

Mr. Garner enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard, on January 6, 1959, and served as a Sergeant until his honorable discharge on January 5, 1964. For his service, he was awarded the General Thomas J. Stewart Medal.

He was Protestant by faith.

Mr. Garner was a lifetime member of the North Franklin Volunteer Fire Company, where he served as secretary for 37 years.

He was a member of the Washington Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #22, the Edwin Scott Linton Post #175 of the American Legion, and the Alpine Club. He enjoyed hockey, football and NASCAR racing.

Mr. Garner was a graduate of Washington High School.

He was the last of his brothers and sisters.

His first wife, Nancy Stickle, died on February 15, 1997.

On November 23, 2002, he married Linda McCartney, who survives.

Also surviving are 2 sons, David (Donna) Garner, of Washington and Daniel Garner, of Claysville; 2 daughters, Deborah (James) Pierson, of Washington and Denise (James) Roberts, of Prosperity; 2 stepsons, Jack McCartney, Jr., of Georgia and Anthony (Sandra) McCartney, of Washington; 2 step daughters, Lori (David) Travis, of West Alexander and Crystal (Troy) Gabriel, of Georgia; 4 grandchildren, Ryan and Shaun Pierson and Alex and Rachel Roberts; 8 step grandchildren, JR, Jeff McKean, Tiffany Travis, Alex and Jacob McCartney, and Jeremy, Matthew and Cristyn Gabriel; 3 great grandchildren, Hailey, Aydan and Audi McKean and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received on Sunday, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave., Washington, PA 15301, where services will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at 1:00 p.m.

A Fireman's Service will be held on Monday at 7p.m.

Burial will follow in the Washington Cemetery.

Full military honors will be accorded graveside by the Edwin Scott Linton Post #175 of the American Legion.
