Husband of Joan du Marais, daughter of Geoffrey du Marais, Justiciar of Ireland. Father of:
* Theobald Butler, 3rd Chief Butler of Ireland 1224-1248

Secondly, husband of Rohese de Verdon at the specific request of Henry III of England. They were married shortly after the agreement made 04 September 1225. Their children were:

His mother would remarry to Fulk FitzWarin and became outlaws, thought to have the basis for the story of Robin Hood and Marion.

Despite the friary was not built properly until his grandson founded it, he is reportedly buried here, perhaps what existed before the friary was built.Theobald le Botiller born 1201 was also known as Theobald Boteler, and Theobald Butler. He was the son of Theobald Walter, 1st Baron Butler and Maud le Vavasour. He had livery of his lands on Jul 18 1222. The agreement to marry occurred on Sep 4 1225. The marriage is presumed to have followed shortly afterwards. Their children were:

John de Verdon 1226-1274 who inherited the western part of the Lordship of Meath in virtue of his marriage to Matilda de Lacy.

Maud de Verdon; died Nov 27 1283; who married firstly John FitzAlan, feudal Lord of Clun and Oswestry and de jure Earl of Arundel.

Theobald was summoned cum equis et armis (Larine: "with horse and arms:) to attend the King into Brittany, as "Theobaldus Pincerna" on Oct 26 1229. He died on Jul 19 1230 in Poitou, France and was buried in the Abbey of Arklow, County Wicklow.
