Marilyn (Pflueger) Schmutterer, 83, of Sioux Falls, died March 12, 2012 after a long decline due to Parkinson Disease.

Visitation will be 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM Friday, March 16, 2012 at the Miller West Funeral Chapel in Sioux Falls. A memorial service will be 1:00 PM Saturday, March 17, 2012 at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.

Marilyn Myrtle Pflueger was born to Reverend Jesse and Myrtle (Mauderer) Pflueger in Seattle, Washington, October 30, 1928. She graduated from Pacific Lutheran College in Parkland, WA, majoring in biology and chemistry, at a time when that was highly unusual for a woman to study those subjects. Marilyn moved across the country to get her Master's in counseling from Syracuse University and worked with the Lutheran students there until marrying Dr. Gerhard Schmutterer in 1954. She worked as secretary to the president of Augustana College until her daughter was born, and then raised her family and was active in First Lutheran Church and Augustana College activities. She frequently entertained Augie students in their home, especially at Christmas. Marilyn was a great cook, a frequent swimmer at the YWCA, and in one of the family sojourns to Germany, mastered the art of making straw stars and crafted hundreds of them over the years. She was a gracious, joyful and creative woman and loving mother.

Marilyns family members are Erika Lehmann, Sioux Falls; Hilary, Los Angeles, CA and Christian, Ngaoundere, Cameroon; Paul and Tina Schmutterer, and Ellen, Samantha and David of Sioux Falls; and Martin Schmutterer and Nadya Nedelsky, and Thomas and Gabriel, St. Paul, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brothers and sisters-in-law, Jesse and Alice, William and Gretchen, Henry Gerhardt and Ruth, Merle, Raymond and Betty.

Among those who helped care for her in this last year, the family especially wants to thank Compassionate Care Hospice and Comfort Keepers and Arlene Bich. The family requests no flowers, but memorials to First Lutheran Church, Augustana College or Lutheran Campus Ministry or the charity of your choice are welcomed.
