US Congressman. Born in Nieder Rebbach, Austria-Hungary, he immigrated to the United States, where he became an important and influential journalist in Wisconsin. As editor of the Milwaukee Daily Vorwaertsm, he was one of the organizers of the Social Democracy in 1897 and the Social Democratic Party, in 1898. In 1911, he was elected as a Socialist to the Sixty-second Congress, serving until 1913. After several times to be reelected for another post in Congress, he was elected as a Socialist to the Sixty-eighth, Sixty-ninth and Seventieth Congresses, serving from 1923 to 1929. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his editorial work. He died of injuries at age 69 after being struck by a streetcar in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
