US Congressman. He served the then 7th District of Illinois in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1843 to March 3, 1845. He graduated from Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky with a degree in law. After graduating, he practiced law in Jacksonville, Illinois. During the Black Hawk War of 1831-1832, he served in the Illinois Militia. He later was brigadier general in command during the Mormon trouble in Hancock County, Illinois in 1844 and later received the rank of major general. In 1832 he was appointed prosecuting attorney for Morgan County, Illinois. From 1836 to 1842 he served in the Illinois State House of Representatives. In 1842 he was elected as a member of the Whig party to the United States House of Representatives where he would go on to serve only one term. During the Mexican War, he recruited the First Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infantry and was commissioned a colonel. He was killed during the Battle of Buena Vista.
