Mary was born July 25, 1921 in Greenfield, Iowa and resided in Iowa until she moved to MI in 1986 to be with her daughter, Patricia.

Following high school, she received a teaching certificate and taught in a one-room country school until married. She worked in restaurants, bakeries and was the head baker for the Des Moines Public School District until retiring.

Mary loved family gatherings, gardening, exercise classes. She was an accomplished seamstress, cook and baker and proud of her Irish heritage.

Truly an Angel of God on earth, she will be fondly remembered for her kindness, unconditional love, devotion and care of all her family and many friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John A.. and Anna E. (Spain) O'Brien, her sister Elizabeth Waltz, her husband of 49 yrs. Kenneth L. Cook, her daughter Judith Schiller, and in memory of her brother Wayne O'Brien (Phyllis) who passed away February 27, 2012.

She is survived by daughters Patricia Anderson, Beverly Hills, MI, Carolyn (Dee) Bodin, W. Des Moines, IA, Constance (Tim) Blackburn, Kansas City, MO.; six grandchildren, seven great- grandchildren, five siblings, a large extended family and many friends.

Celebration of Life will be held Wed., April 11, 1 to 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University, Clive, IA followed by Interment on April 11, 2 p.m. at Glendale Cemetery, 4909 University, Des Moines, IA.
