Law Enforcement Figure. He is noted as the first African American to hold the office of Inspector of Police. He entered service with the Columbus Police Department in September 1937. He earned the rank of Sergeant in October 1946 and the rank of Captain in August 1952, becoming the first African American in the United States to hold that rank. On November 22, 1954 he assumed the office of Inspector (Deputy Chief) of Police after the death of Inspector Thomas A. Scully. This promotion was noted in many places, from local to national newspapers and magazines. He retired from the Columbus Police Dept prior to 1963. Later he served as a city councilmen for Columbus, Ohio.
