Carolyn A. Banghart, 84, of McElhattan, died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at her home after a long battle with cancer.

She was born on Nov. 10, 1925, a daughter of the late Katherine Quiggle Banghart and John Franklin Banghart Jr.

She was raised in the Jersey Shore/McElhattan areas, and graduated with a BS from the former Lock Haven State College in the late 1940's. Carolyn taught school for two years at the Wood Schools near Philadelphia.

She then enrolled in the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing in Baltimore, Md. where she obtained a BS in Nursing before going to the Frontier Nursing Service in Eastern Kentucky to complete Nurse-Midwifery education in the School of Nurse-Midwifery. On graduation, she remained there for many years taking positions as a nurse-midwife in clinical and educational aspects of that role. She was with the organization from 1953 to 1970, but left for two years during that time to return to Johns Hopkins University and the School of Public Heath, where she graduated with an MPH. On her return to Kentucky, she became Dean of the School of Nurse-Midwifery and remained tin this position until 1970.

In the early 1970's, Carolyn was a Nursing Consultant in maternity Care and Family Planning with the Maryland State Health Department. In 1974, she returned to the Jersey Shore/McElhattan area and was an assistant professor in Public Health Nursing at the Pennsylvania State University School of Nursing. In 1980, she joined forces with her long-time friend, Valerie Jewell, also a nurse-midwife, to operate a small Home Birth Service among the Amish of this area, with appropriate medical back-up. They continued to provide this service for 12 years until Carolyn retired.

She spent some of her retirement in Mississippi, where she volunteered her services to two midwifery programs, helping in the education of childbearing aged women. In 1999 she returned to McElhattan and has been in retirement and in declining health. However, she enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader and followed current affairs closely.

She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Jersey Shore, and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Surviving are her friend and long-time companion, Valerie A. Jewell; a nephew, John Franklin Banghart IV and his wife Lynn; nieces Patricia Banghart Olson and her husband Edward; a great-niece and spouse, and a great-nephew and his family.

Memorial services and burial in the Linnwood Cemetery will be announced at a later date by the Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore.
